The Worth of a Firefly

Fireflies have often held a unique space in the world’s cultures. They have attracted the attention of poets and artists, often used as a representation of the magical, the beautiful, and the innocence of childhood. In Japan, fireflies herald the changing of the seasons, where the occasion is celebrated by crowds gathering to observe and appreciate fireflies. Clearly, these little, glowing critters hold a special place in the heart of humanity. But do we really know just how important they are?

Not only do fireflies contribute to our sense of wonder and beauty, they are extremely important as an indicator of the level of environmental purity. Fireflies need very clean environments to lay their eggs and flourish. When firefly populations decline, it is one of the first warnings we receive that the environment of the area is declining. This is the reason that every year, ECOS and the Kamegawa Environmental Protection Club work together to clean the Hiya River and ensure that the fireflies (and subsequently, the environment of Beppu) thrive.

For the past two years, due to the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic, the firefly watching event in Beppu couldn’t be held with its usual fanfare. In 2022, however, the event was finally held in full swing! With around participants, including both Beppu citizens and APU students, the event was an amazing return to form. Additional attractions such as takoyaki and kakigori stalls, live music and a lottery where you could win fabulous prizes helped make the event even more enjoyable. But at the end of the day, the real attraction was the beautiful glow of the fireflies in the summer evening, lighting up the dark undergrowth surrounding the Hiya River. Walking down the pathway, it was easy to see the awe on everyone’s faces as the fireflies flitted in and out of the darkness.

The conservation of fireflies is a serious and important endeavor. As an indicator and as an inspiration for humanity’s sense of wonderment, the importance of our bright friends cannot be understated. Here’s to many more successful events in the future, where we can continue to share the joy of fireflies with all of Beppu.
